3 days!

Well, I think March came in like a lion and is still going out like a lion. Last night was crazy! We had hail and tornado warnings everywhere. Thankfully nothing bad happened here but our trees were blowing and bending and it thundered and stormed most of the night. Rocky barked every time it thundered, so we felt like we hardly got any sleep at all.

When it storms we have three extremely tall pine trees in our front yard that look like they might fall over and crash into our house.

It's kind of scary. Plus they suck up soooo much water! We have tried so many times to plant grass and bushes around them, but they are just water hogs. haha So we have decided that they have to go. We have some men coming this week to cut them down. I wish you could see how tall they are. I am curious how they are going to cut them down since the trees are taller than our house! But I know our front yard is going to look alot better.

Today our school had an "All-School Movie" as a reward for surpassing our fund-raising goal. We got to see Up. Have you ever seen it? Steve has been trying to get me to order it on Movies-On-Demand or rent it at Red Box but I just never thought I would be into it. But I loved it. It was so sweet and sad that it made me cry! I especially loved the beginning part about the main character, Carl, and his wife, Ellie!

I'm not a huge "kid movie" person, but I would recommend this one!

Well, in three days it will be Spring Break! I am so excited. I have some fun things planned...mainly getting a few projects done around the house and also a couple of really short trips. Plus it is going to be in the 80's this weekend and all my kids will be home. I am already planning to do some grilling out and some yard work and spending lots of time on my back porch! It is going to be so nice. Now if I can just make it through the next 3 days! :)

Happy Birthday Mark!

Mark, I can't believe you are turning 20 today!! How on earth did that happen so fast? It seems like just yesterday you were little and now you're officially in your 20's! I am sad and happy at the same time.

I will always remember when you were born. It was a windy March day and we were out flying a kite with Ashley when I went into labor. It seems only fitting that you were born in the middle of March Madness. Maybe that's why you love basketball so much. Daddy was watching game after game while I was doing all the hard work to get you here!

You weren't even walking yet when you became an NC State fan. And now you go to school there!

You were always the cutest thing and you were such a good brother. Still are! Your sisters love you!!

You started out really young loving to play cowboys and Indians.

You were a HUGE Davy Crockett fan and you loved playing with guns.

Guess that's still pretty much the same, too!

And you have always had fun hanging out at the beach and in Florida. I love all our fun memories there!

You have always been so much fun to hang out with and brought so much humor and laughter to our family.

You have been such a blessing to all of us and we all love you sooooo much!! I am so thankful that God gave you to us. I know He has big plans for your life and I am excited to see what the next years are going to bring. Happy Birthday to my sweet boy!!

What To Watch??

This weekend I was folding some laundry and I was trying to find something on TV to watch while I was doing that. Now, I think I have maybe close to 100 channels on my cable and I am telling you I could not find a SINGLE thing to watch! I kept flipping and flipping and all I could find were the trashiest shows I have ever seen. Seriously. It was so disappointing and honestly just disgusting. Have you watched TV on a Saturday lately? Well, don't bother. It is slim pickins!

I finally found TV Land and settled on an old episode of Bewitched...

and as I was watching I was remembering back to my childhood when everything on TV seemed so much more simple and innocent. I'm sure everything wasn't squeaky clean but at least there were some funny and wholesome shows to choose from. Or maybe some shows that gave you something to think about and had very little sex or violence or bad language in them.

The first show I think I can remember loving when I was really, really little was Family Affair. I just loved Buffy and Jody and Buffy's doll, Mrs. Beasley. I even had coloring books about them. Once I remember I got in trouble for something and my punishment was not being able to watch that show. I remember I cried all night.

And we always watched The Lawrence Welk Show on Saturday nights, too. Now THAT is some good entertainment. I know it's cheesy, but those people really can sing and dance and play instruments! My kids even grew up watching it too on PBS!

When I was in elementary school, my favorite shows were Brady Bunch

and The Partridge Family.

You could count on the fact that these shows would be kid friendly and usually taught some kind of lesson.

Every day after school growing up we would come home from school and get a snack and watch reruns of Leave It To Beaver and Gilligan's Island. Whatever problems they were having could always be wrapped up neatly in about 25 minutes!

I also loved Happy Days

and Laverne and Shirley.

I loved all that 50's music and the lighthearted comedy that didn't have to involve sexual inuendo. Seriously. It seems like so many comedies today are so raunchy and not even funny at all.

And, of course, there were two of my VERY favorites...The Waltons and Little House On The Prarie! I was a huge Laura Ingalls Wilder fan when I was little and I read all her books. So, of course, I loved the show, too. It always seemed like those shows could make you cry. I even decided when I was really little that I loved the name Laura and wanted to name one of my daughters Laura! And I did! I am glad that show is still on in re-runs.

Watching the Waltons made me want a big, close-knit family that sat around a big table together every night and said sweet things to each other before they fell asleep. And I got that, too!

I'm really not a prude and I do think there are a few good shows on today...lots of them are reality type shows though, like Amazing Race and American Idol and Biggest Loser. But honestly there are so many shows out there that are just appalling to me. Just sayin! But I will climb down off of my soapbox now! haha

Do you know of any good, wholesome, sweet shows that I'm not thinking of??? What do you watch these days?

Making Plans and Saying Goodbye

Well, our pretty weather didn't stick around. Today it is raining and chilly outside. Church was really good this morning though and we went to Pei Wei for lunch. That was my first time ever going there and I really liked it. I heard it was owned by the same people who own PF Changs. Well...no wonder I liked it! I love PF Changs!! I will definitely be going back.

Mark had to leave to back to school today. Boo!! Spring Break went by too fast. Rocky is going to miss him. He loves it when Mark throws the ball with him.

I am going to miss him too!

We've been watching so much basketball this weekend. It's not looking too good for the ACC. I think only Duke is left??

And we have been really interested in the voting on the Health Care Bill. It sure has been a heated debate! What do you think about it?

I have a few things I am thinking about this week...

First of all, Mark's 20th birthday is on Thursday. I won't be able to be with him this year for the first time ever. But Steve is going to Raleigh on business so he is planning on taking Mark out to dinner and he can take his birthday presents to him, too.

I am thinking I need to make this dessert this week. I haven't had it in a long time and I just thought of it today and it sounded really good to me.

Steve and I are planning a family trip to California as soon as school is out.

Steve and I have been there before but we have never taken the kids. We are going to go to Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Napa, Carmel, Yosemite, and Sequoia. We are trying to get it all planned out this week and book all the flights, etc. If you have ever been and have any good recommendations for anything, let me know!

First Day Of Spring

Today was the first day of spring and it sure did live up to everything I love about this season! I think it was about 77 degrees here today and just absolutely gorgeous. Everything is starting to bloom now...forsythia bushes and redbud trees and little green buds on everything. :) I bet it will only be another week or two before the dogwoods and azaleas start blooming and then the pollen will be 3 inches thick, but it will be so pretty.

This week has been a little rough with daylights savings time! Uuugghhh. I am not a fan of getting up in the middle of the night! Has it been hard on you? But at least I got to sleep in this morning and it was great. Thank goodness for Saturdays!! Once I got up I started getting a few things ready for a Sip and See that I had at my house this afternoon. Sip and Sees are like a baby shower after the baby is born. I told Mark I was hosting a Sip and See today and he said, "What in the world is a Sip and See?" And Steve said, "It's kind of like when guys have an Eat and Watch!" haha

Here are a few pictures from today...

Here is the girl who we gave the Sip and See for....Nikki and her baby Campbell. Campbell was born right before Christmas but she is such a tiny little thing!

Here is my sister-in-law Britney and me with Nikki. We hosted the Sip and See together...

Ashley got to love on Campbell a little bit. Keely is Nikki's sister and one of Ashley's good friends...

These are just a few of the girls who came. We had about 15-20 people so it was fun!

Mark has been here all week on his Spring Break but he has to go back to school tomorrow. He asked me if I would cook him a steak tonight before he leaves, so we grilled out. Ashley and John came over for dinner, too, and we watched some March Madness. I didn't fill out a bracket this year. I think Baylor is doing really well so maybe I should pull for them since I went there! :)

Tomorrow I think the weather is supposed to get much cooler so I am glad I got to enjoy this amazing day. I hope you are having a good weekend!

College Spring Break

This past week was Laura and Lindy's Spring Break. (Mine isn't for three more weeks!) They just hung out here. They had planned on going to Charleston with Ashley for a few days, but Lindy got the flu and Laura got a bad cold so they ended up not going. All week they just stayed home and shopped and went to movies and slept. I think it's kind of nice to do that sometimes and I am glad they got to rest! Mark also got home Thursday night for his Spring Break, so I am glad they all got to be home for a little while together.

Friday Steve left for the beach with some friends, so it was just us here this weekend. I made mashed potatoes and meatloaf Friday night because my kids requested it since they miss home cooked meals. I also made a quicker version of Pioneer Woman's Rosemary Rolls. I just used Sister Schubert rolls and put butter and rosemary on top. I'm sure they aren't as good as the real thing, but they were close!

Saturday was a gorgeous day here. (And the daffodils are definitely blooming now!) Laura and Lindy and I met Ashley and did some shopping and then went to Chili's for lunch.

Then Saturday afternoon I went to a baby shower for a friend of mine from church. She is having her second little girl in April.

When I got home, we took dinner over to Steve's mom. She is doing really well. Laura and Lindy made her this sweet vase. It has a Bible verse on it and they filled it with flowers for her.

Lindy had to get back to school last night and Laura left this morning. I will miss them, but I am glad they are coming back for Easter in three weeks. Can you believe Easter is almost here??

Well, I know 5:00 is going to come waaayyy too early tomorrow because of springing forward. Uuugghh. I am going to try to get to bed early tonight. I think I will pretty much be walking in my sleep this week! Hope you had a good weekend!

Slacker

I know I have been a serious blogging slacker lately. I think it's just been a combination of being so busy and then when I do have a free minute, not really wanting to be "plugged in". I love blogging and I wish I had more time to do it, but sometimes if I have to make a choice about how to spend my time, I have to choose something else over being on the computer. You know what I mean, right?

I wanted to give you an update on Steve's mom. The surgery went really well. She is doing as well as she could be doing at this point. I think she may even go home tomorrow and she is in really good spirits! Thank you so much for praying for her. That really is one of the very best things about blogging. I love how everyone lifts each other up and encourages each other.

Anyway...guess what I saw yesterday? The redbud trees were blooming!!!

I was driving home last night and my heart really started beating fast when I saw it. (That's pretty sad!) They are always the first ones to bloom and make us so hopeful that spring is just around the corner. I haven't seen any daffodils yet, but I know they must be coming up any minute.

I have been so mad at myself this week because my camera battery has been dead and I keep forgetting to charge it! But tonight all my kids were home so we all went out to dinner at Carrabas. We sat a big round table and just had the best time being together. It seems like it has been so long since we have done that! I love having all my kids home together. I wish I could have taken some pictures.

Tomorrow is Friday! I am really looking forward to the weekend. I have a baby shower to go to and I am taking dinner to Steve's mom on Saturday night. What is your favorite thing to take to someone who has had a baby or surgery, etc? Other than that I am planning on enjoying hanging out with Laura and Lindy before they have to go back to school on Sunday and just being lazy.

Hope it's been a good week for you!

Prayer Request

My girls have been home this week on Spring Break and they couldn't have picked a nicer week! The weather here has been amazing the past few days. Doesn't that just put you in the BEST mood!!?? I think spring might finally be here!!

I can't believe this weekend is Daylight Savings Time. Don't forget! I love that it stays light outside longer, but I don't like getting up an hour earlier. Uuuugghhh!

I have been super busy this week, but I wanted to ask you to pray for something for me tomorrow. Steve's mom is having a mastectomy. She is a breast cancer survivor and has been cancer free for 10 years, but now it has returned. So tomorrow, she will have the surgery and then we will see what to do next.

This surgery is not easy and I'm sure it will be a rough few weeks and months of recovery. I know she would be so thankful to have anyone who would to remember her. I knew I could count on all my sweet blogging friends!!

I will let you know how it goes! I'm off to watch American Idol and try to get to bed early. Who are you pulling for so far?

Exciting News and A Typical Day

First I wanted to give you some exciting news! I think I asked all of you...my sweet blogging friends...to pray for Mark a few weeks ago because he was applying to study abroad?? Well, he got accepted and he will be going to Santander, Spain in September for 3 months!

He is sooo excited and I am so happy for him. He has wanted to do this for a very long time and I am so glad it is finally happening for him. :) Yay Mark!

Next, I know I am very late to this party, but I thought I would join in on Kelly's Show Us Your Life and tell you my typical day.

Let me tell you that my day starts waaaaaayyy too early for me. The alarm usually goes off around 5:00am, but I always hit the snooze button a time or two. And I finally get up between 5:15 and 5:30.

This is actually probably the worst part of my day. Good thing I get it over with first thing. haha :)

It doesn't take me long to get dressed and do my hair and make up because I take my shower at night. By 6:00 I am usually eating a bowl of cereal and some fruit and getting my coffee ready to take with me out the door.

I try to leave around 6:20. I like to get to school a little early and have some time in the morning to get my classroom ready and just have a minute of peace and quiet before the craziness begins!

My kids start arriving around 7:00. They always come in so happy and love telling me stories when they get there. Meanwhile I am checking their homework and making sure they have written all their homework assignments for the next day down correctly.

The first class of the day is math. We switch classes and I have a really small math class...only 14 students. Math is not my favorite subject but we make it fun by playing lots of games and using lots of manipulatives.

After math my class goes to some kind of special like music, art, PE, media, or computer. I try to use this time to answer all my e-mails or run errands or plan. I usually get a coke during this time.

That always helps the day go better! This 40 minutes goes by sooo fast!

Once my class gets back to the room, they eat their snack and we have show and tell. Then it's time for Literacy. This is when we do spelling, comprehension skills, writing, novel groups....all kinds of things!

Then it is lunch (also known as BRUNCH since we eat at 10:40!) I have about 15 minutes to eat by the time I get to the cafeteria and get my class settled, run to the bathroom, heat up my lunch and sit down. I always eat in the lounge and at least I have a minute or two to sit and talk with my team.

After lunch it is recess. We take the kids outside and usually I enjoy this unless it is freezing cold like it has been lately. I can't wait until spring when the weather warms up and I get to sit outside and soak up the sun for a little while. That is such a nice part of the day.

After lunch we have Silent Reading. The class can sit anywhere in the room or even lie on the floor with pillows, etc.

I try to work with students who need some extra help at this time or sometimes I answer e-mails, etc.

Once Silent Reading is over, it is back to work. We usually work on writing and either science or social studies.

Before you know it, the day is over and it's time to pack up and go home. At the very end of the day I read aloud to the class while we wait for the bell to ring. The class LOVES this time! We have read lots of fun books this year like Henry and Ribsy, Tom Sawyer, Pippi Longstocking, and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.

The bell rings at 1:45 and I walk my students to the busses.

After school I usually have some kind of meeting. I have staff meetings on Wednesdays, team meetings on Tuesdays, Character Club on some Mondays, and IEP meetings that may be scheduled for any time. I also have parent conferences as needed. So lots of times I don't get to do anything to even start getting ready for the next day until around 3:30 or so. I get lots of phone calls after school from my kids, too, so I spend about an hour catching up with everyone it seems like. Then there are papers to grade, e-mails to write, plans to be made, and copies to be run.

I always clean my room a little bit and make sure everything is set out and ready for the next day before I leave.

I try to leave around 4:30 each day. Then I run errands to Wal-Mart or the grocery store. I usually get home around 5:00-5:30. I set all my stuff down and start cooking dinner. We usually eat dinner around 6:30 while we catch up on the news.

After dinner Steve is always so sweet to clean up the kitchen for me so I can sit down for a minute and relax. We love to watch Jeopardy or King of Queens!

By then it is around 7:30. Sometimes I do a little laundry or we might call or skype with one of our kids. Around 8:00 I get in the shower and start getting things ready for the next day. By 9:00 I am usually trying to catch up on my e-mails at home, checking blogs, or watching some DVR'd shows.

By 10:00-10:30 I can hardly keep my eyes open and it is time to go to sleep and start the whole routine over again!

Whew! It makes me tired remembering it all. Haha!
