Life's Ups And Downs

Sometimes my life seriously becomes nothing but a whirlwind....and I'm caught in the middle spinning like a top. This week has been like that with not a minute for blogging or catching up on anyone else's blogs. :( I'm sorry! I LOVE keeping up with all my blogging friends, so hopefully I can see what everyone's been up to this weekend.

Anyway...I was just thinking about some of the week's ups and downs today.

Let's start with the downs...(so we can end on a good note).

*A good friend of mine just lost her mother about seven months ago, and now her daddy is getting ready to die. So sad. I can't imagine losing both my parents so close together.

*My brother Brent and his wife Britney are expecting a baby in a few weeks. This week the doctor scared them a little bit indicating that there may be some problems, but we will not know until she is born. Please keep them in your prayers!

*Mark's car got hit! Can you believe that?

*Our air conditioner broke, and believe me, it is NOT going to be cheap to fix it. Holy cow!

But enough of those downers...let's think about the positives!

*Our school just got awarded the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence today! Woo-hoo! We are in the top five percent (in standardized test scores) of all the schools in North Carolina. We had a big ceremony today and everyone wore blue. I got to sing in a little ensemble to help celebrate.

*I found some old friends through Steve joining Facebook. I think I'm going to have to break down and join. haha It's just too much fun to connect with old friends!

*Ashley was voted "Most Likely To Succeed" by her Chi-Omega sorority sisters. She was also voted "Most Likely To Have Kids First". :)

*Today is the last day of April. Wow...May is here already??? LOVE IT! May is super busy, but it is one of my favorite months of the year.

*Lindy won an award this week for the awesome job she does in her TV Productions class at school. She really is great at editing videos and making slide shows put to music. I will have to put one on YouTube and show it to you sometime. Girl's got talent!

*Tomorrow is College Day at Laura and Lindy's high school. Lindy came into our room last night and was sad because she didn't have an East Carolina t-shirt to wear and didn't think she would have time to get one. Well....guess what my sweet husband did? While they were at school today, he went out and bought them t-shirts for each of their colleges and had them all laid out on the kitchen table when they got home along with balloons.

Yep, he's a keeper! ;)

I think overall the good outweighed the bad. I am blessed every day!

Decisions, Decisions...

Busy Monday...

Today was our Challenge Run at school. The kids have to run for 10 minutes and see how far they can go. They did such an awesome job. Afterwards, we took this picture of the whole class on the playground. I'm in there on the right. :)

This picture is really small!

I had a long meeting after school, then came home and tried to get a few things done here.

We've been doing lots of roommate searching this week. Laura and Lindy have finally decided where they want to go to school. Laura is going to Appalacian State University

and Lindy is going to East Carolina University.

Now the roommate search is on. I can't believe how much easier it is now thanks to Facebook!! You can find someone who has all your same interests and beliefs just by searching on the college groups. Steve and I were laughing that it is kind of like e-Harmony or some dating service in a way. :)

Steve actually joined Facebook today! I know we are a little behind the times. I have been thinking about joining, but I am still deciding. I'll let you know if I do! If you are on it, tell me what you like about it!

A Very Happy Birthday :)

Today was a wonderful day. :) I had so much fun and the spoiling continued. This morning Steve and I woke up and went out to breakfast at a cute little place called Carolina Cafe. They have these yummy blueberry crunch bagels that are kind of like a blueberry muffin and a bagel put together. That's what I got. Mmmm!

Then we headed to the new Ikea store which is HUGE. We were looking for some new furniture for Ashley's room and we spent a long time browsing through the store. It is so big that it takes a long time. It even has child care and a restaurant inside just so people can "make a day" of it. We decided on this bed and I think I am going to paint her walls a "sage-y" green.

I will show it all to you when we get it done.

After that, we met Laura and Lindy for lunch at Q-doba before their softball game. It was about 90 degrees again today, and they had two softball games back-to-back, so they were really hot. But they won both of their games!

After we ate, we ran by a shoe store nearby and I got these gold sandals.

I have been needing some new summer sandals and I thought these were cute.

When I got home, I found this on my front porch...

My mom and dad had come by and dropped off these beautiful flowers. I especially love the white hydrangeas!

They also got me the book I was just mentioning on my blog Eat This, Not That. You should get this book and keep it in your car to refer to when you are on your way through a drive through or headed to a restaurant like PF Changs or Macaroni Grill! It is really informative!

In addition to the book, they gave me a couple of CD's and some fun money! I think some shopping is in my future!

Then it was off to get my nails done and come home to get dressed for dinner. Steve's mom and dad dropped by before we left to bring me some pretty flowers! My porch is getting better by the minute with all these gorgeous plants!

We decided to go downtown tonight for dinner at a seafood restaurant called La Vecchia's. We got crab cakes for an appetizer, then I got shrimp and grits for dinner. It was so good!

When we got home I opened my gifts from Steve and my sweet kids. They know what I like! Clothes and jewelry! Very sweet.

Wow...I am just about worn out from all the fun today. It has been a really nice birthday. And thank you so much for your sweet birthday wishes yesterday. I love my blogging friends!

Spoiled Rotten

It's Friday! Can I get an amen??? When I got in my car this afternoon, the thermometer said 91! I'm not complaining, though. I LOVE hot weather!

Today was a good day at school. First of all, we are reading one of my favorite books ever...Charlotte's Web. I just love that story and I think it is perfect for spring. If you've never read that book, you seriously should. Even adults would love it. E. B. White is the BEST writer!

Second, when you are a teacher you get so spoiled on your birthday! Tomorrow is my birthday, so my class celebrated it today. I got these bright flowers and a balloon that sings when you tap it.

I also got a cookie cake that we shared with the class. Plus a little girl in my class has a dad who is a chef. He made my dinner for tonight...homemade meatloaf and cheesy potatoes. Are you kidding me??? How wonderful is that!? Dinner is made for tonight.

My class also gave me a day at the spa. I have never done that, believe it or not. So I am looking forward to a day of relaxation. Plus a little girl in my class gave me a $75 gift certificate to a very nice upscale restaurant that I have never tried before. I love trying new things, so that will be fun.

Tonight I am looking forward to maybe sitting on my porch and reading a magazine when it cools off and just being lazy this weekend. Yay for Friday nights!

In The News

There have been lots of things in the news lately that have caught my attention. First of all, I was really excited about Miss North Carolina winning the Miss USA pageant! I watched some of it and I thought she was really cute.

But I was also very impressed with Miss California standing up for her beliefs when she was asked by Perez Hilton what her stance on gay marriage was.

Some people believe that her answer that marriage should be between a man and a woman cost her the crown (she was first runner up). But I am just glad that there are people out there who are willing to stand up for what they believe is right, no matter what the cost. I thought Miss California was very respectful and I think tolerance should run both ways. Pageant contestants should not feel pressured to be politically correct. They should be able to give an honest answer.

And I have had that song by Susan Boyle stuck in my head all week. I've probably heard it a thousand times this week on every news show out there. haha But one of the things everyone has been saying is that she needs a makeover. The flip side of that is that part of her beauty and charm is the way she looks naturally. I think she is so sweet and while I think she is beautiful in her own way, I think she would look really great if she plucked her eyebrows just a little. (Only if she wants to, though!) What do you think about that?

And, this doesn't have anything to do with the news, but has anyone out there seen the book Eat This, Not That?

I have talked to several people about it recently and now I want to get it. It seems to have really good ideas for people on the go (like me) who want to make the healthiest choices possible. If you have read it, did you like it??

Well, time for me to get going and get some things done. Have a great night!

One Weekend...Three Parties!

This weekend was very busy...but it was fun! Friday night was Joy Prom at our church. This is such a sweet event. I wish you could see how excited these people are to be at a place where they are treated like royalty for an evening. I love seeing their smiles. Joy Prom is a perfect name because joy is written all over their faces. We had 450 disabled people at the event, not to mention the volunteers from our church. We even made the front page of the local section of our paper! This is a picture from The Charlotte Observer. One of the things we do is announce each person when they arrive and then they walk down the red carpet. On each side of the red carpet, everyone is cheering and taking pictures. They feel like a superstar!

Here are a few pictures of the night.

Saturday was the baby shower that I hosted at my house for three of the girls in my Sunday School class. It was a GORGEOUS day so we moved the party out onto my back porch. There were about 25 people there and we had the best time sitting outside and just visiting. They got so many nice gifts and I think everyone had a fun time. Here are some of the pictures...

We had soooo much yummy food. One of the best things was jalepeno bites. I am getting the recipe from my friend, Julie, and will share it with you when I get it!

One of the things I made was the punch. It was a recipe I found online and I really liked it. It was called Luscious Slush Punch. Here is the recipe for it.

Luscious Slush Punch

2 1/2 cups white sugar
6 cups water
2 (3 ounce) packages strawberry flavored gelatin mix
1 (46 fluid ounce) can pineapple juice
2/3 cup lemon juice
1 quart orange juice
2 (2 liter) bottles lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage

DIRECTIONS
In a large saucepan, combine sugar, water, and strawberry flavored gelatin. Boil for 3 minutes. Stir in pineapple juice, lemon juice, and orange juice. Divide mixture in half, and freeze in 2 separate containers.
When ready to serve, place the frozen contents of one container in a punch bowl, and stir in 1 bottle of lemon-lime soda until slushy.

Here are the three pregnant ladies! One is my sister-in-law, Britney. She is in the middle. The other two are both due on the same day and they are both having boys!!

Look at all the presents!

My sweet friend, Katie, and I gave the shower together.

Hanging out on the porch...

It was a fun day!

And then, yesterday, was Ashley's first bridal shower! Her Chi-O friends wanted to give her one before she graduated. It was in Columbia, so Laura and Lindy and I drove down right after church yesterday morning.

One of the girls giving the shower's parents have a house on the lake and that is where the shower was. We had it outside and it was just beautiful! It is so much fun having your first shower and getting things that have your new monogram and that you are going to use in your new home!! I remember getting so excited when I was getting married just looking at everything and knowing it was for OUR house!

The shower was so nice. Ashley is blessed to have such sweet girlfriends. Here are some pictures of the day.

Ashley's two friends, Amanda and Rachel, hosted the shower...

Ashley is the best "gift-getter"! She gets so excited over everything!

I hope you had a good weekend! :)

Lots of Stuff

How did so many days go by and I didn't have a minute to blog?? I can't believe it is already Thursday!

What have I been up to this week? Lots of getting busy back at work. But I have had some fun things happen this week! I think you may remember me telling you how I always find gift cards in my purse that I have never used?? Well, I changed purses this week and found two $10 cards to Target, a $10 card to Starbucks, and a $20 Pier One gift card. Yay! So I left extra early for work on Monday and went by Starbucks for my tall, skim, decaf hazelnut latte.

By the way, is there a certain way you are supposed to place an order at Starbucks?? Ashley and I were having that discussion while we were in New York. What is your favorite drink at Starbucks?? I am stuck on hazelnut lattes!!

I also decided to join Twitter last night just for fun. I don't really think I will do any tweeting myself. (Goodness...I barely have time to blog!) But I do like reading what is going on in everyone else's life!! Some people think that is just crazy. I've heard people say, "Who cares what anyone is doing at any given moment during the day??!!" I think you can get extreme with it, but I am just a huge people watcher. That is so entertaining to me. And I love getting to know people and hearing all about their lives. That does not bore me at all!

So...Mark told me that he gets Tweets (is that what you call it??) from famous basketball players and that you can get Tweets from well-known people in addition to friends. So I followed anyone I could think of that I either know or watch on TV! What do you think about Twitter??

Tomorrow is Joy Prom at my church. It is a prom that we host for anyone with special needs in this area. I was in charge of the flowers this year. I am excited about seeing these sweet people enjoying such a special night. Here is my blog about it from last year. It was one of those times that you will never forget.

Saturday I am hosting a baby shower for three pregnant girls (one of them happens to be my sister-in-law, Britney) at my house.

I am looking forward to that. It is supposed to be such a nice weekend. Yay for spring!

Then on Sunday, I am going to Columbia for a bridal shower for Ashley that all her Chi-O friends are giving her. They wanted to do something for her before she graduates. I can't believe the showers are already starting!! I will tell you all about it Sunday night.

Today we took the entire second grade on a field trip to the community of Matthews, North Carolina. We toured the Town Hall, The Public Library, and an old-fashioned hardware store...you know the kind that has sells baby chicks along with fertilizer? We had a picnic afterward and it was such a beautiful day. I just LOVE sunny spring weather!! Doesn't it put you in the best mood??

Here is a picture of me with one of my students!

Hope you are having a good week!
